Hobbes, Constant, and Berlin on Liberty

Isaiah Berlin’s ‘Two Concepts of Liberty’ regards both Hobbes and Constant as supporting the negative version. Both took a favourable view freedom to live one pleases. But this shared preference arose from radically different overall philosophies. Hobbes’s support for ‘the silence laws’ reflected his happiness preference-satisfaction. Constant’s sphere absolute rights was supplemented by active citizenship connected with belief in ‘perfectibility’ that itself linked religion. These theories involve altogether understandings image an ‘area’ preserved interference. Berlin takes over appeal human nature without idea progress had supported it.
